Obituary:
Betty Jane Alverson, 84, of Rockford, IL, passed away peacefully into the arms of her Lord on Friday, March 13, 2009 in Fair Oaks Health Care Center, South Beloit, IL. She was born January 8, 1925 in Richland Center, WI, the oldest daughter of Charles Russell and Josephine Aimers Murray. Betty attended Beloit schools and was in the class of 1943. She married Walter K. Alverson in January, 1943 and later married Floyd Genung. Betty then lived with her long-time companion, Wesley “Skip” Straub until his death in 1999. Betty had a long and interesting life. She was among the first women to work in factories during World War II working at Warner Electric Brake Co. when the men were called to war. Betty also worked as a dispatcher at Blue Bird and Yellow Cab companies in Beloit for many years. Her work career included several years at Admiral in Harvard, IL, seven years at Amerock, Rockford, IL and culminated her retirement in 1989 after working 18 years at G.C. Electronics in Rockford, IL. She was a member of the Rockford V.F.W. Auxiliary. Betty loved to read and crochet. She is survived by her daughter, Judy (Edward, Sr.) Zhe of South Beloit, IL; son, Carroll “Butch” (Wendy) Genung of Freeport, IL; step-daughters, Donna (Ronald) Hahn of Beloit, WI and Connie Straub of Tucson, AZ; step-son, James (Elaine) Straub of Tucson, AZ; eight grandchildren, Edward (Christine) Zhe, Jr. of Janesville, WI, Amy (Patrick) Grice-Kniffin of Beloit, WI, Tammy (David) Gaines of Freeport, IL, David Steele of Springfield, IL, Melissa, Carrie and Matthew Genung of Rockford, IL, and Christopher Genung of Freeport, IL; fourteen great grandchildren; one great-great grandson; brother, James (Sally) Murray of Beloit, WI; three sisters, Sharon (Leon) Crosby and Karen (Jeff Brannon) Colwell both of Rockton, IL, and Kathleen (Douglas) Willis of Genoa City, WI; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, life companion, Skip Straub; sister, Mary Ellen Williams and brother, Stanley (Jeanette) Murray. The family would like to extend its gratitude to the nurses and staff at Fair Oaks Health Care Center for their kind and loving care. They made “Betty Boop’s” time there a good memory. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 21, 2009 in the Sun Valley Presbyterian Church, 1650 Sun Valley, Beloit, WI with the Reverend William Petterson officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be given in her name to Northern Illinois Hospice and Grief Center, 4215 Newburg Rd., Rockford, IL or Sun Valley Presbyterian Church, Beloit, WI.
