| Obituary: |
Charles W. “Chuck” Florey, age 67, died in the early morning on Friday, September 18, 2009 at the University of Wisconsin Hospital after an illness of many years.
Chuck was born September 7, 1942 in Beloit, oldest son of Robert W. and Caroline (Capps) Florey, and lived in Beloit most of his life.
A big man, Chuck was the largest running back in Wisconsin high school history when he graduated from Beloit Memorial High in 1960. Chuck loved football in any form; he was a regular at Turkey Bowl games and watched every game broadcast in the area, usually providing the coaches with long-distance comments and suggestions.
Chuck joined the US Air Force after high school and spent four years in Hawaii. After a few years working in California, he returned to Beloit College where he received a B.S. in Physics and met the love of his life and best friend, Katy Hansen, who was his better half for more than 30 years.
Chuck’s intense curiosity about the world made him an inveterate reader of scientific journals and caused him to pursue an MS in Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After working for Colt Industries Engine Division in Beloit for many years, he spent the rest of his working life as a Research Assistant at the University and retired in 2003 when his health began to fail.
Working as a team, Chuck and Katy made their brick bungalow a beautiful and welcoming refuge where friends and family were always warmly welcome. Chuck loved his home and to the day of his death was planning improvements that would bring even more visitors electronically.
Chuck’s friends will tell you that although big and gruff, he was basically a sweet guy who would give you the shirt off his back. His dogs, if they could talk, would tell you that they could have had no kinder or more trustworthy friend.
Chuck was predeceased by his father and by a beloved sister-in-law, Ruth Smith. He is survived by Katy Hansen and his mother in Beloit, three brothers, Jim Florey in Ann Arbor, MI, Rob Florey in Whitehall, WI and Dan (Shawna) Florey in Madison; one sister, Martha Florey in Madison; two nieces, Lia (Serge) Florey in Ann Arbor and Britt Florey in Los Angeles; one grandniece, Zili, and many other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held at Daley Murphy Wisch and Associates Funeral Home and Crematorium, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI with Reverend Gene Van Galder, a family friend, officiating. Inurnment will be in the military section of East Lawn Cemetery, Beloit, WI.
