John Raymond Althoff, 88, died Saturday, February 13, 2010 at the Illinois Veterans Home in LaSalle, IL, after a long illness related to a traumatic brain injury.
He was born August 21, 1921 in Kenosha, WI, the son of William and Eva Grau Althoff. He attended St. Mathews Grade School in Neosho, graduated from Hartford High School and Dodge County Normal School in Mayville. After teaching at Hayes Elementary School in Ashippun, WI, for one and a half years, he was inducted into the Army Air Corps and became a B-17 co-pilot in the Eighth Air Force. He flew 28 bombing missions over Germany. After graduating from Whitewater University, where he was a member of the Phi Chi Epsilon fraternity, he accepted a position as a Commercial teacher at South Beloit High School and subsequently earned a Masters Degree at the University of Iowa. On June 14, 1947 he married Gloria Pauline Mukansky in Elkhorn, WI and they made their home and raised their family in South Beloit, IL. Following Gloria’s death on July 4, 1975, John later married June, widow of Emerson N. Glauner, on July 24, 1976 in St. Peter Catholic Church, South Beloit, IL.
John became the South Beloit High School principal in January of 1953 and superintendent in July of 1956, a position he held for 22 years. Under his leadership a new Junior High School was built and additions were added to Wheeler, Clark and Riverview Schools to accommodate an enrollment of 1,691 students in 1964. Other accomplishments included implementation of the Drivers Education classes and a successful literacy program for parents, establishment of a stock Civil Defense Shelter in 1966, and acquiring a Boy Scouts of America Charter for the high school in 1967. He also wrote a weekly educational column for the “Borderline” newspaper and conducted a regular radio program related to education. Following his retirement from education, John was employed 18 years at Wesley Willows Corporation as Business Manager, Director of Development, and Marketing and Sales Associate. Over the years, John served as Beloit Savings Bank Corporation Member, Salvation Army Advisory Board chairman, Junior Achievement Board chairman, Beloit College President’s Council member, and an Ambassador of the Greater Beloit Chamber of Commerce. He was a charter member of the Beloit Serra Club and treasurer of the Serra Club of Rockford, IL. In 1967 he was named “Outstanding Beloiter” by the Beloit Daily News and “Booster of the Week” in 1973. He also served as president of the Whitewater Alumni Associates, United Givers, and South Beloit Businessmen’s Association. Other memberships include St. Peter Church, WWII Combat Flyers, Sundowners Golf League, Grinnell Hall Golden Aires chorus and the South Beloit American Legion Post # 288.
Survivors include his wife, June; sons, Thomas Althoff of Lisle, IL, William (Linda) Althoff D.D.S of Winnetka, IL, James (Cindy) Althoff of Clinton, WI, Jerry (Kelly) Althoff of Roscoe, IL; daughters, Mary (Patrick) Cotter of Rockton, IL, Joan (Steven) Hatch of South Beloit, IL; step sons, Arthur (Carol) Glauner of Deerfield, MI, and Dennis (Patti) Glauner of Phoenix, AZ; daughter-in-law, Bonita Althoff; grandchildren, Adam (Cindy) Brigham-Althoff, Michael Althoff, George and Ava Althoff, Karen (Tim) Matrick, Laura (TR) Moreau, Nicholas (Jamie) Cotter, Olivia Cotter, Elizabeth Althoff, Justin (Mindi) Hatch, Casey and Jordan Hatch, Kristen, Nicole, Ryan and Zachary Althoff; step grandchildren, Carrie, Devin and Mitchell Glauner, David (Jodie) Gagnon, James (Amy) Gagnon, Morgan Shelly, and Lindsey (Drew) Jensen; and numerous great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents, sister, Gertrude, brothers, Robert and Charles, grandson, Jeremy Cotter and step granddaughter, Cathy Vanderkooi.
Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 18, 2010 in St. Peter Catholic Church, 620 Blackhawk Blvd South Beloit, IL, with Fr. Jerome Koutnik officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens, South Beloit, IL. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home and Crematorium 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, with the Rosary at 5 p.m.
