James C. Blackwood, 75, of Beloit, WI, died Friday, February 19, 2010 in his home.
He was born October 23, 1934 in Tomah, WI, the son of John and Dorothy Cassels Blackwood. James was a 1952 graduate of Tomah High School, a 1956 graduate of the UW–LaCrosse with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree, and a 1967 graduate of the UW-Whitewater with a Masters Degree in Biology. He was a veteran of the United States Army Reserve. James married Leora Harris on May 23, 1959 in the First United Methodist Church, Tomah, WI. She predeceased him on October 26, 2005.
James taught science for a total of 38 years in Almond, WI, Ontario, WI, Glen Flora, WI, Tony, WI, and Hawkins, WI, before coming to Beloit in 1962 to teach Biology at Lincoln Junior High School. He retired in 1994 after 32 years of teaching at Lincoln and McNeel Junior High Schools where he served as the Science Department Chair for 31 years.
James was a past master of the Morning Star Lodge No. 10 F.&A.M., a member of the Scottish Rite and Zor Shrine Temple of Madison, WI, past president of the Beloit Shrine Club, and former member of the Zor Shrine Chanters, member of the Madison Consistory, former member of the Masonic York Rite Bodies, Senior DeMolay of the Joseph Miller Chapter of LaCrosse, WI, past patron of the Phoenix Chapter #215, Order of the Eastern Star, past advisor of the Beloit DeMolay and Beloit Assembly No. 9 of the International Rainbow for Girls, a member of the Rainbow Grand Cross of Color, and a member of the Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity, former member of the Beloit Rifle Club where he was a member of the Border Pistol League, a member of the Bi-centennial committee for the City of Beloit, and a former member of the National Sciences Teachers Association. He was also a former member of the Badger Travelers Campers Club and the Disabled Parking Commission.
James coached at Lincoln Junior High the boy’s tennis, girl’s seventh grade basketball, ninth grade girl’s softball, and kept score and time at the boy’s basketball games. He was an umpire for the Beloit Men’s slow pitch softball. He also coached his son’s Little League team, the Angels. James belonged to the Boy Scouts of America and in later years served as a counselor at Two Bear Scout Camp and as a Round Table Commissioner. James was also active with Pack 628 at Hackett Elementary School.
The family would like to give a special thank you to his caregivers, Robin Gitchel and Kathy Wicks, Dr. Leo, Dr. Niemiec, Dr. Wright, and Dr. Wang, the nurses of the Critical Care Unit and Beloit Hospital especially, Denise, and the Beloit Regional Hospice.
Survivors include his daughter, Jane M. Blackwood of Beloit, WI; son, Jamie S. (Sherrie) Blackwood of Hagerstown, MD; five grandchildren, Brittny Blackwood of Beloit, WI, Joseph Blackwood of Shippensburg, PA, Harris Blackwood, Dakota and Cali Durning all of Hagerstown, MD; numerous cousins; special friends, Marge Johnson, Dave and Judy Coburn, Mike and Cindy Ross and Maritza Gonzalez.
He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Charles Blackwood.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 27, 2010 in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI with Reverend Dr. Forrest Clark officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Tomah, WI. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home with a Masonic service to be held at 7:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in his name to the International Order of Rainbow Girls of Wisconsin Scholarship fund or the Beloit Regional Hospice.
