Chauncey Mickelson Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Chauncey Mickelson, 94, of Beloit, passed away Friday, July 8, 2022 at Suites of Beloit Assisted Living. Chauncey was born in South Wayne, Wisconsin and grew up in Beloit, where he resided for most of his life. He was graduated from Beloit High School in 1946 and then served in the U.S. Army from 1946-1948. He was a member of Artillery Battery B, Fort Bragg, North Carolina and then attached to the 7th Division, 31st Infantry while stationed in Seoul, South Korea from 1946-1948. While serving in Korea, he was a starting guard on the Regimental basketball team that went on to win the Far East Asian tournament in Tokyo, Japan. After being Honorably Discharged, he attended Carthage College in Carthage, Illinois. He was graduated with a degree in Education in 1953. While attending Carthage he played shortstop on the baseball team and starting guard on the basketball team. Chauncey’s teaching career spanned the years of 1953-1989. He started at Johnson Creek, WI from 1953-1956. Along with teaching, he was the basketball and baseball coach and guided the football team for one year, winning the conference championship. He moved to South Beloit High School from 1953-1961, where he also coached the basketball team. In 1961 he became a teacher and baseball coach at Beloit Memorial High School. During his tenure as coach from 1961-1984, his teams made four trips to the state tournament, winning it all in 1965. He retired from teaching in 1989. In 2009 he was inducted into the Beloit Sports Hall Of Fame. Chauncey always said that his success in coaching and teaching was due to his dedicated, hard- working peers and the athletes he coached. Chauncey and his wife of 70 years, Doris, enjoyed their early years of retirement spending warm summer days at their trailer on Turtle Lake, near Delavan, WI, relaxing and enjoying their pontoon boat. They also enjoyed winter vacations in Florida and Arizona and traveled throughout the United States visiting friends and relatives. Chauncey is survived by his wife, Doris, his sons, Robert (Diane) of Colorado, Steven (Marianne) of Iowa, and Ronald (Mary Beth) of Rockford, five grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. He wished to say thank you to Charlie and Sue Losinski of Beloit for being such good friends and neighbors and for all the kind things they did for him throughout the years. Chauncey’s family would like to thank the caregivers from Suites of Beloit and Beloit Regional Hospice for their dedication to him in his final years and weeks. Graveside Services for Chauncey’s family will be held in Oakwood Cemetery, Beloit, WI with military honors accorded by the V.F.W. Mead Allen Post #2306.
